Sleep Apnea
IN WASHINGTON & OREGON
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which someone repeatedly stops breathing for short periods of time throughout the night. This is caused by either the throat muscles relaxing and blocking your airway or your brain not signaling to breathe. In some cases, it is a combination of both. At Smiles Dental, we provide custom mouth guards to provide you with a good night’s sleep and alleviate symptoms you may be feeling throughout the day. Schedule with us to learn more!
Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
There are a few tell-tale signs of sleep apnea, some of which may need to be observed by either an at-home sleep test or another person. You may be suffering from sleep-disordered breathing if you’re experiencing any of the following:
- Chronic Snoring
- Periods of Interrupted Breathing While Sleeping
- Gasping for Air During Sleep
- Dry Mouth
- Headaches Upon Waking Up
- Waking Up Throughout the Night
- Difficulty Focusing
- Increased Irritability
Sleep Apnea Mouthpieces
The most common mouthpiece used to treat apnea is a mandibular advancement device. This specific device uses metal hinges to reposition your jaw to allow for proper airflow. Additionally, a device that retains the tongue may be used to treat less severe cases of apnea. Each device is custom-designed for your unique needs, and your condition will be evaluated after you’ve been wearing your mouthpiece for a period of time.
