How Can You Prevent Coffee Stains on Teeth?

If you’re like most of our team at Smiles Dental, your morning coffee is an essential part of your day. However, we have to acknowledge that the tasty beverage that wakes you up and puts some pep in your step also has a downfall: it can stain your teeth.

In fact, coffee stains are one of the most common aesthetic issues we see, and they can be difficult to remove. Today, our team wants to share some tips for how you can enjoy your coffee without staining your teeth.

1. Rinse Your Mouth Out After

After you enjoy your morning coffee, drink a glass of water. Not only will you feel hydrated, but you can also protect your teeth. Water washes away coffee residue and can keep your teeth from staining.

2. Reach for a Straw

By drinking with a straw, you can minimize the contact between coffee and your teeth. This gives coffee less time to stain teeth and can keep your smile whiter. Even better, reach for a paper straw to help the environment and your teeth.

3. Brush Your Teeth (Duh!)

If you are a coffee drinker, it is more important than ever that you practice good oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time.

Take care that you’re not brushing within 30 minutes of drinking coffee, as brushing can weaken your tooth enamel and make your teeth more susceptible to stains.

4. Don’t Forget to Floss

If you brush your teeth without flossing, you’re leaving 40 percent of your tooth surface unclean! Bacteria and acid love to hideaway in the spaces between your teeth. Bacteria and plaque weaken your tooth enamel and can make your teeth more likely to stain from coffee. Floss each and every day to protect your white smile.
