Signs You Might Be Brushing All Wrong

We all learn to brush our teeth when we’re young so that by the time we’re adults it may seem like second nature. The problem is, that’s part of the reason why many of us don’t take the time to assess whether we’re actually brushing the correct way. And yes, there is a correct way! Here are some signs to look out for that could mean there’s room to up your brushing game:

Your Gums Are Bleeding or Are Inflamed

If you notice that your gums are red, puffy, or bleeding every time you brush them, then that could be a sign that there’s still a build-up of bacteria there that hasn’t been cleaned away and is causing problems. It could also mean that you’re brushing too aggressively or using a brush with hard bristles and it’s irritating your gums. Remember to be gentle and use a soft-bristled toothbrush!

You Finish Brushing Quickly

Many people may think they’re brushing for an adequate amount of time but when they take a timer to it they realize they aren’t brushing for that long at all. The general recommendation is to brush for at least two minutes. Brushing for that long will help you ensure a thorough clean!

You Don’t Brush Your Tongue

Yes, brushing your teeth is the main goal, but don’t forget about your tongue too. A lot of bacteria like to hide out there, and not brushing your tongue can also lead to bad breath. Make it a habit to give your tongue a nice scrub as part of your at-home dental routine.
