Preparing For Your Oral Surgery Appointment

If it’s determined that you’re in need of oral surgery, whether that’s a tooth extraction or a dental implant placement, Smiles Dental provides premium care. Even though oral surgery may seem intimidating, it’s actually nothing to fear! Here are some tips to help you prepare for your oral surgery appointment!

Follow Pre-Op Instructions Closely

Before your oral surgery appointment, you will receive a detailed set of instructions, including any dietary restrictions. Make sure you read your specific instructions carefully to ensure that you are completely ready for your appointment and won’t have to have your oral surgery pushed back.

Prepare & Buy Food Beforehand

Many patients are on a soft food and liquid diet after oral surgery. Stock your fridge and pantry with post oral surgery-friendly foods so that you don’t have to venture out for food. You’ll be happy that you have great options that won’t hurt your teeth without needing to leave the house to buy them!

Grab Medication Before Scheduled Surgery

After your oral surgery, you will most likely just want to rest. Getting your medication before your appointment will allow you to go straight home and not have to wait in the car while your designated driver picks up your medication for you.

Schedule Transportation

Have a friend or family member take you to your appointment and pick you up. More than likely, you will have gone under some form of anesthesia or dental sedation and won’t be allowed to drive yourself.

Don’t Smoke Before or After

Smoking can cause issues with your oral surgery. If you do smoke, make sure you don’t for at least 12 hours before your scheduled surgery. It’s also crucial to refrain from smoking for at least 24 hours after your surgery to prevent dry socket and other potential damage to the healing area.
