At Smiles Dental, we are constantly striving to provide quality care to our patients without relying on potentially toxic treatments. Our team of biological dentists doesn’t use products with mercury in them for treatment — and our office environment is safe and non-toxic so you can rest assured that your family is in good hands. Today, we want to talk about how we help patients avoid potentially dangerous fillings containing mercury and offer safer alternatives.

What’s the Deal with Mercury Dental Fillings?
In the past and today, some dentists use amalgam fillings to treat cavities. Even if you don’t recognize the word, you probably know what we’re talking about: amalgam is that silver-colored material. Amalgam contains liquid mercury as well as silver, tin, copper, zinc, and other metals. Amalgam fillings are used because they are durable enough to withstand the environment in your mouth. However, opinions about amalgam fillings containing mercury are evolving.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that mercury fillings release mercury vapor when they’re placed, removed, and upon chewing. In high levels, mercury can cause damage to the brain and kidneys. While the FDA has ruled that the amount of mercury present in amalgam fillings is not high enough to cause damage, many patients are opting for non-toxic alternatives.
Removing Mercury Fillings
We are proud to offer mercury filling removal using our Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (“SMART”). This allows our patients to switch to a non-toxic alternative filling using safe methods for removing mercury fillings and protecting you throughout the process.
A Biocompatible Alternative to Amalgam Dental Fillings
When choosing an alternative filling, we test for biocompatibility. We know that each of our patients is unique, and this allows us to provide a new filling material that agrees with your own individual biochemistry.
