Our doctors follow the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontics, which recommends an orthodontic screening for children around the age of seven or about the time of the eruption of the upper permanent front teeth. This permits the identification of any developing problems as well as the initiation of any indicated interceptive treatment.
Orthodontic Treatment and Options
Most people think of braces when they hear the word orthodontist. But Orthodontists actually deal with a wide range of issues such as tooth grinding, speech difficulties, thumb sucking, bite problems, early or late loss of baby teeth, misalignment and much more.
Problems can emerge throughout the lifespan and understanding when and how to correct problems is part of an orthodontist’s professional expertise.
Certain orthodontic procedures are more effective in younger people before the face and jaw have completed formation. But many orthodontic procedures can occur at any age.
Older adults who may not have had access to orthodontic treatment earlier in life still have time to enjoy the benefits of treatment once they learn their options and the positive effects that procedures can bring.
Metal Braces – Metal braces are the most common orthodontic treatment option, and are generally efficient and cost effective.
Clear Aligners – Clear aligners are also available. In some cases they can be somewhat less effective, and the actual treatment time may be longer.
Retainers – Straightened teeth can become crooked again, so upon completion of orthodontic treatment we use retainers to hold the teeth in alignment while the bone and gums remodel and adapt to the new position of the teeth.
